Fairy Tale, Shmairy Tale

"The American Dream: The list of Things to Do"

Step 1: You're Born
Step 2: Survive high school
Step 3: Get drunk at a college party
Step 4: Make some friends
Step 5: Get a job
Step 6: Live on your own
Step 7: Get your place
Step 8: Find the love of your life
Step 9: Have Kids
Step 10: Get old and retire

Instead of the american dream being a list of things to do, what people should have have done is told you what you should know. Instead of "The American Dream: The list of things to do" - it should read "The American Dream: What you probably should expect."

Step 1: You're born
Step 2: You won't really know whether or not you survived high school until you get through it. Just get that diploma. Oh and you most likely will end up cooler than the person you were jealous of and not as cool as the person you made fun of.
Step 3: You're first time getting drunk is a momentous occasion. It will make you realize a) how bad alcohol tastes, b) you probably will do it again if it didn't make you puke the first time, and c) you probably will get suckered into doing it when you know you shouldn't
Step 4: Friends come and go. Period.
Step 5: When it comes to choosing your career, know this: (Scenario #1) Choosing the "safe"/"collegiate" route doesn't always equal happiness in your job, it only makes job-security more probable. (Scenario #2) Following your passion even in face of adversity and fear, may lead you to a career filled with daily fulfillment or down another road that may be better for you. If you choose the first, just know you're not a failure, it just means you probably didn't get the support to get past that "tipping point" that you needed to.
Step 6: Living on your own is probably going to be the biggest lesson you will ever have. Enjoy the bountiful moments because they are gifts, Enjoy the problems because they will turn into great stories, and know when to say when.
Step 7: Be smart. Owning a place means more stress. Don't think because you bought a place you're mature. It means you're a grown up with another bill. Maturity is an earned title.
Step 8: Love isn't a formula that can be written. Just enjoy meeting the people that come in your life and know that love comes in so many packages. Just take each one as a gift.
Step 9: Don't have kids if you're not ready.
Step 10: Remember Step 5. You're going to get old. Deal with it. Just know while you're getting old, you need to be responsible.
